How to Optimize Your Online Dating Profile

Whether it’s Tinder, Bumble, Hinge or eHarmony, people are using online platforms to find true love. While it may feel like you’ve run a marathon just agreeing to sign up to one of these platforms, it’s a whole other race making your account be one that your ideal person can’t help but swipe right on

To save you a headache, we’re spilling all our tinder tips when it comes to optimizing your profile for success. Sit down and buckle up. You’re in for a ride.

Pick your app of choice.

The first step to optimizing your profile is deciding what app you’re going to use! Each platform has its own benefits, so decide what you’re hoping to get out of the app. If you’re more comfortable starting conversations and avoiding an onslaught of DMs, Bumble may be the platform for you. The woman has to start the conversation and if she doesn’t, the match is removed after 24 hours.

If you’re okay with others messaging you first and sparking the conversation, pick whatever app you want! Plus, you don’t have to limit yourself to one app either. All of these tips for optimizing your online dating profile will work with every app.

Pictures say a thousand words.

People are visual. And to be truthful, your photos play a huge part in whether a person swipes right or left. So, let’s pump yourself up and pick the best photos you have on your camera roll.

Here’s what to consider:

Smile
Simple as that. Show off those pearly whites and you’ll be sure to look like your friendly self. You want your profile to be inviting and appealing to who you’re trying to attract. When you show yourself smiling, people will see you as a pleasant and ideally fun to be around person!

Kick it off with a photo of you simply smiling. Whether it’s a selfie or a photo someone took of you. The first one should just be of you.

Candid or Adventures
Show off what you like to do in your next photo. Whether it’s hiking, cooking, rock climbing or getting outside with your dog, use a photo that showcases who you are. This photo will help tell the story of what you do in your spare time and who you are.

Group Shots
Finally, let’s break down the group shot in a dating profile. While it can showcase that you’re a friendly person and like to be social, consider whether your friends want to show up on your profile. If you’re looking for a way to acknowledge that you like to have fun, you may want to consider a funny photo of just you!

A group shot isn’t a hard no, but there’s a fine line on whether people enjoy seeing them or not. If you’re going to do a group shot, keep it at one only!

Focus on your bio.

Never skip your bio. Let us repeat that… never skip your bio!

What can you say about yourself in as little word count as possible?! Some things to share about are your hobbies, what you do for a living, foods you like and what languages you speak. You can share your favourite band or movie to give people insight into the types of media you enjoy. You can share your favourite ways to unwind after a busy day and how you like to have some fun!

Be open but not obnoxious. The idea of your bio is to get people to swipe right instead of thinking you’re self-centred and decide to swipe left.

There are some things you can decide whether you want to add to a profile, depending on what type of relationship you’re looking for. You can share the type of person you’re interested in. Whether you like men, women or both. Whether you’re looking for casual or serious and whether you want kids or not in the future (depending on your age). These things aren’t NEEDED in a profile, but they can help you spend less time getting to know someone who doesn’t align with what you want out of life.

At the end of the day, your bio needs to be a conversation starter. If they don’t learn anything about you from your bio, you need to redo it.

Keep it positive.

When you’re searching for your significant other, keep it light and positive. Your online dating app profile is not the place to air out your dirty laundry! This can come further down the dating line during those deep and meaningful conversations. But, review your photos, your captions and your conversations. Stay away from red flags topics and stay light and breezy!

Your dating profile should be where you present to the world your best self! It’s not where you complain about not getting good matches or how annoying it is to have to online date in the first place.

Update it when you’re traveling.

A great way to optimize your profile is to update it when you’re travelling. Dating apps will show you candidates based on where your location is. If you’re travelling for work or play, be sure to update your bio to let people know you’re just in town visiting.

Stay clear of cheesy pick up lines.

The final thing we need to talk about are the pick up lines. While this isn’t exactly a point when it comes to optimizing your dating profile, it has to be said.

Be unique and creative. Don’t be dull and don’t start the conversation with a pick up line you could easily find on Google’s top 10 worst pick up lines.

If you want to start the conversation, pick something from their bio or in one of their pictures to talk about. Engage with them by asking them a question.  And whatever you do, stay clear of those emojis that have a second meaning to them...

Don’t overthink it. At the end of the day it’s online dating.

So there you have it. A couple of great ways to optimize your dating profile. At the end of the day, we don’t want you to think of dating as work. Even though we know how it may feel like that sometimes!

Online dating takes time and as long as you put your best foot forward and have a positive energy, success is just around the corner! Remember, we’re all human and we’re all just looking for a bit of love. Take some time and put that love into your profile and see what magic the future has in store for you.

Happy swiping!
